Important questions when evaluating a BFR device:
Most simple BFRT devices are imprecise and leave the user guessing as to what pressures or tensions are appropriate. Wraps, and some pneumatic systems provide guidelines such as applying a “7 out of 10” perceived tightness or giving a wide range of potential pressures. Many of these systems are very sensitive to how much pressure is applied and a “7” for some people could be a “10” for others. The result is guesswork on your end and a potential for full occlusion and nerve compression injuries. B STRONG’s web-app and proprietary design mitigate against applying too much pressure, but even if you make a mistake, you still won’t be occluding blood flow completely, and therefor remain safe.
Just about all traditional pneumatic cuffs are specifically designed to occlude blood flow. To mitigate this risk, some cuff-style BFR systems are tethered to a pressure monitor during exercise. But, this limits mobility and the types of exercises one can perform. Also, unless the user is tethered to multiple monitors or has a single device with multiple pumps and pressure transducers, only one cuff can be used at any one time.
Wrapping can similarly lead to full occlusion if one isn’t careful. While cheap, wrapping is imprecise and not repeatable so you never know exactly how much compression you are applying and whether that compression is dangerous or not.
So you’ve checked that you have blood flow before starting your BFRT session. As you get going and the limbs full with blood, they swell and the pressure under the BFRT device increases.
How do you know if your “now-bigger limb” still has blood flow or not? B STRONG’s proprietary design stretches to accomodate changes in muscle size during contractions and during the workout. While pressures in the belts increase slightly during a session, our design is insensitve enough to bladder pressure that these changes are inconsequential.
