A Recent study published in JAMA Intern Med 2022 and a relatively new method of training in North America that is actually a remedy for the problem.
The JAMA Internal Medicine January 2022 study concludes if adults 40+ increased the level of their exercise intensity for only 10 minutes a day from mild, to moderate-to-vigorous, it would save over 100,000 people's lives.
But how do you get people to actually raise their level of exercise intensity to reap the benefits of exercise? The solution: Blood Flow Restriction Training or BFR.
The well-researched exercise method of Blood Flow Restriction Training or BFR, is spear-headed/pioneered in NA and Europe by Sports Scientist, Olympic Physician, Exercise Physiologist, Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD, whom Matt has interviewed many times over the years for his depth of expertise in areas of Olympic training, athletic performance/training, altitude training, health wellness through exercise for all populations, anti-doping, etc.
"The problem with exercise is most people do not get to the moderate-to-vigorous level needed to actualize the benefits of exercise. Proper and safe BFR solves the problem in a short 10 to 15 minute session. Raising the level of exercise intensity using less weights and doing trivial exercise, is exactly what BFR does, and why BFR is exciting for all populations, and exactly why BFR can revolutionize health and fitness for all adults. Sounds too good to be true, but science says it works," says Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD.
Jim SG, MD is the leading authority on BFR and lectures/runs BFR Certification Courses approved by BOC, NASM, etc., for Physical Therapists, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, High Performance Staff, Special Forces, Military, Personal Trainers, Pilates instructors, Yoga Instructors, and even Consumers looking to understand the vast mechanisms/applications of BFR.
Jim SG has implemented BFR in training Olympians Mikaela Shiffrin, Bode Miller, Galen Rupp, and numerous others to improve performance as well as with "normal populations" for improving their health, bone density, lean body mass, strength and power.
